Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare: COVID-19 Youth Survey Animation Project

We were honoured to recently work with the Centre for Excellence in Child & Family Welfare on an animation to recruit participants in the ‘Hearing from Young People’ survey.

This research seeks to investigate the impact of Covid-19 on vulnerable young people over the last two years. The important findings will inform how health services are provisioned to children and young people living with adversity.

This project, like any other, required a unique approach from our Melbourne animation company. The added complexity with this proposal was that we needed to communicate with and engage vulnerable young people between the ages of 15-19 who are dealing with homelessness, family violence and living in child protection.

There are a few key ways that we tackled this.

Firstly, talking to young people in their own language is vital. If you miss the mark they’ll disengage quickly. It was therefore important to choose a voiceover artist from the demographic we were targeting. The young female voice heard talking viewers through the video is friendly but matter of fact. She delivers the information to her peers in an easy manner about issues that she may very well be dealing with too.

Secondly, using an animation was a deliberate choice. Reminding a young person of their vulnerability is undoubtedly confronting so a considered delivery strategy is essential. By transforming the information into a friendly animation, it becomes accessible and non-threatening which means young people are more likely to engage with it.

Thirdly, we made it clear that participation would be anonymous and added further reassurance that they could take a break or quit at any time. Coping strategies were also included as an acknowledgement that the topics covered could be triggering.

Talking to teenagers, especially vulnerable ones, requires a very careful and respectful approach. The combination of using their own voice, delivering the information via: a friendly animation and adding reassurances and support strategies, was vital to the success of this project.

It’s been a really rewarding opportunity for our Melbourne animation studio. We love what we do, especially when it has such a positive impact on our community.
