Royal Melbourne Health, Mental Health Services is a public service supporting individuals across northern and western metropolitan Melbourne. They provide a range of specialist mental health services for young people, adults, and older individuals who are experiencing, or are at risk of developing, serious mental health conditions.
We recently developed a series of four animated videos for this vital service, ‘Exploring the Role of Peer Support Workers in the Mental Health Sector’.
One video offered an introduction to the ‘Consumer Lived and Living Experience Workforce’, who play a significant role in mental health and alcohol and other drug (AOD) services.
A ‘consumer’ refers to someone who has experienced, or is currently experiencing, mental health or substance use challenges. This can also include those who have engaged with, or attempted to access, mental health or AOD services.
The ‘consumer workforce’ consists of individuals who bring their personal lived or living experiences into their professional roles. These roles may include peer workers, consultants, educators, managers, directors, and researchers.
We showed that what unites consumer workers is their ability to use their personal experiences to support others navigating similar situations.
Given the sensitive nature of mental health and substance use topics, it’s essential that the delivery of messaging around these issues is handled with care. Live-action videos can be difficult to produce when involving individuals who may be vulnerable, potentially limiting how effectively key information and support strategies are communicated.
