The annual Big Day Out at Flemington Racecourse was always a major highlight of Melbourne’s major music festivals in the summer calendar until fairly recently, and we often enjoyed photographing it for an overseas news and photo agency.
This selection of images features some of the main acts from the 20th anniversary year in 2012 with performances from Kanye West, Soungarden, Kasabian, Noel Gallagher’s high Flying Birds, Regurgitator, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, My Chemical Romance and Royskopp. This was the year that also brought us the Triple J Unearthed winners King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard performing to their largest crowd yet. Sideshow activities included some awesome tricks and sweet moves on the skate ramp from the legendary Tony Hawk.
Our brief was to capture photos of both the live performances and the general atmosphere and experience of the event for distribution to overseas media outlets.
Working under the baking sun and walking between the various stage located around the expansive Flemington showgrounds site and surrounded by thousands of lively music fans for 13 hours while carrying all our camera gear certainly made us appreciate the long shower at the end of the day!
